Summary

As a part of the $81 million Coos Bay School District GO-bond program, the Madison Elementary School was prioritized for seismic upgrades, major renovations and significant building additions. The front of the building was demolished and replaced with a new 9,600 sf administrative wing and media center. An existing breezeway between the classroom wing and gym was replaced with a new corridor, restrooms and an elevator to the lower level of the gym for ADA access to the commons and kitchen. Seismic upgrades were made to the existing classroom wing and gym buildings along with a new roof, entire replacement of the HVAC system, IT system replacement, and selected finish improvements. Site improvements including new parking, landscaping, separate bus and parent drop-off driveways and a covered play structure were also included. A local design firm was competitively selected for this project, and a local general contractor was selected through a competitive CM/GC process. Design was completed for bidding and permitting in February 2021 and construction started in June. The original scope of work was completed on-schedule in August for school to open on-time. Additional work to renovate the kitchen, commons and gym were added in early 2022 which we coordinated with the design and construction team to finish in November 2022.
